An interesting follow up to my last post about the contrast between public/private military forces.
It seems as though the frustration has made its way to the firefighting "industry."
Are private fire crews, hired by insurance giants like AIG, more of a help or a hindrance?
Check out this piece in the LA Times.

This is a very interesting article. The Founding Fathers debated what role the government would play in people's lives and how they would pay for it. American taxpayers fund common goods provided to all citizens - the military, the police force, and the fire department.
Your previous post about the detriment that private military forces pose to the American image abroad is very valid. However, I disagree with your view of private fire forces. In the same way that wealthy individuals are allowed to hire private security, they have every right to hire private firefighters to protect their property. These private companies need to be regulated and prosecuted in the case that they do interfere with traditional firefighters but have every right to make a living as hired extinguishers.
